Oil changes are one of the most important and beneficial maintenance procedures for a vehicle. Motor oil breaks down over time and loses effectiveness, resulting in an inability to do its job to protect the engine. When it can’t protect the engine, particles and deposits can get into it, causing malfunctions such as over-working the engine. Regular oil changes are essential to helping prevent this issue and maintaining your Toyota’s overall health. Without an oil change the oil runs out and then there is nothing to lubricate the metal pieces that are rubbing against each other. This causes a lot of friction being built up between the parts. That friction will cause the metal to get too hot and will melt together, which can lead to the engine seizing or failing.
A lot of owners will just bring their car in, let an educated, experienced mechanic change their oil, and then drive it home without knowing exactly why they needed it. Well, knowing the process of an oil change helps to understand its importance. First, the technician will work to drain the oil pan of all the oil in it. By removing the drain plug that is one the drain pan, the oil runs freely into an oil catch, which is then recycled. After replacing the plug on the oil pan, the oil filter is removed and replaced. The oil filter does exactly what it sounds like. It filters out bad chemicals and deposits in the oil and helps to clean it out before getting back to the engine. When the oil filter is replaced, new oil will be added to the engine. A recommended type of oil and amount is specified in the Toyota owner’s manual. Once the oil is refilled and all parts are sealed on to the engine, it will be turned out for a few minutes to get the oil flowing throughout the parts. Then, it is all finished. That is, in a nutshell, an oil change on your vehicle.
