Level 0 – No Automation:

You are likely to find vehicles at this level with features such as cruise control and lane assist. The driver must remain alert at all times and be actively engaged in the driving process to avoid any accidents.

Level 1 – Driver Assistance:

At level one, some of the vehicle’s functions are automated but the driver still has full control over steering and accelerating/decelerating. This level includes features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic braking. The driver must remain alert and attentive at all times to control the car and avoid collisions.

Level 2 – Partial Automation:

At level two, the vehicle is able to take control of some functions such as steering, accelerating/decelerating, and lane-keeping. It’s integrated with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). However, the driver needs to be constantly monitoring the vehicle’s performance and be ready to take over when necessary. When the system detects that the driver is distracted or not paying attention, it will shut off and require input from the driver to resume operation.

Level 3 – Conditional Automation:

At level three, the vehicle is capable of driving itself without requiring any input from the driver. This level includes features such as automated lane-changing and overtaking. You may also find vehicles with automated parking features at this level. The tech can detect the environment and respond accordingly. You as the driver will still need to be present and ready to intervene when needed, however. This level is meant to relieve you of some of the tasks associated with driving in certain conditions or environments.

Level 4 – High Driving Automation:

At level four, the vehicle is capable of fully autonomous driving in various conditions and environments. What differentiates levels four and three is that the car can intervene when the system fails or whenever something goes wrong. It can handle common traffic situations such as congested highways or city streets without needing any input from the driver. The system will be able to detect hazards, sense the environment, and can adjust its speed to match that of surrounding vehicles. Whenever necessary you can choose to override the autonomous system and take complete control of your car.

Level 5 – Full Automation:

This is the highest level of car automation available. Vehicles at this level are capable of navigating complex environments without any input from a driver. They can detect traffic, navigate different types of roads, and even handle difficult weather conditions such as snow or heavy rain. The cars can also respond to any potential hazards and accidents on the road. This level of automation will allow you to completely relax while driving, knowing that your vehicle is taking care of all the tasks for you. They won’t have steering wheels and the function pedals, so you’ll no longer be required to control the car as in the previous levels even if you wanted to.

How Far For Me to Enjoy Full Automation?

Unfortunately, the technology for full automation is not quite there yet. We are still years away from this level of autonomous driving being available to the public. Companies like Tesla and Waymo are making progress in developing fully autonomous vehicles, but for now, they are limited to certain areas with specific regulations. As more research is done and advancements continue to come, this level of autonomy could become a reality in the near future. Until then, we will have to rely on the lower levels of automation available today.
